Instant access to patient records transforms the way University Hospital Birmingham supports patients
University Hospitals Birmingham is one of the UK’s the largest teaching hospital trusts who serve regional, national and international patients.
With hospitals and clinics covering specialities from cutting edge surgical procedures, trauma and military casualties, microbiology research, urgent care and outpatient care, it provides essential and life-changing services to millions each year.
The need for change
University Hospital Birmingham wanted to explore ways to reduce the time frame in which documents could be accessed, and expanded outside of the rigid structure of their existing platform and utilised their existing Kodak scanner fleet.
Originally, documents were taking 24 hours to upload and IT staff were a huge expense for the hospital. Additionally users were limited on functions meaning captured data wasn’t always fully usable.
The Kodak Alaris Solution
KODAK Info Input Solution was used to provide University Hospital Birmingham a simple, thin-client capture solution. By building on existing architecture, Kodak Info Input Solution was integrated into the existing health records application and gave UHB increased flexibility, the ability to add historical items to patient records and instantly update the patient records after the consultation.
The transformation
By integrating KODAK Info Input Solution into their existing Documentum software, the timeframes from receipt to upload was practically eliminated, a 99% improvement on their existing process.
With over 350 users now able to access patient information instantly, we created a scan client that enables distributed capture easily across the site and categorised document types for correct processing automatically. This meant that documents were sent to where they needed to be without the need of manual categorising - reducing lead times even more to accessible information.
KODAK Info Input Solution also enabled University Hospital Birmingham to future-proof themselves by being easily scalable to meet future needs.
