Sustainability

Sustainability at Civica

Sustainability is part of how we serve citizens. It shapes how we run our business, support our people and customers, and reduce our impact on the environment.

Sustainability supports our vision of becoming a global GovTech champion by driving meaningful environmental and social initiatives, and by promoting responsible governance throughout Civica.

Our most significant sustainability impact comes through our products. With a purpose rooted in serving citizens, our solutions deliver meaningful social and environmental benefits on a global scale, positioning Civica as a force for real, positive change.

We work with organisations delivering critical public services, so sustainability means more than reducing our own impact. It means helping customers improve outcomes for the people and communities they serve.

Our environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments are built around three areas: our footprint, our people and our processes.

ESG pillars & commitments

Our footprint

Taking action to reduce our environmental impact across our operations

Our people

Ensuring we take steps to allow our colleagues to grow alongside Civica, fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity

Our processes

Integrating sustainability into how we operate

Net zero

Civica is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions across our global operations by 2040.

To maintain momentum and demonstrate near-term accountability, we’ve also chosen to set interim carbon reduction targets for 2030/31, aligned with best practice and the Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) near-term target setting methodology.

Understanding our carbon footprint

Civica’s carbon footprint includes both direct and indirect emissions resulting from our operations. These are categorised into three scopes:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by Civica (e.g. company vehicles or on-site fuel combustion).

  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy, such as electricity used in our offices.

  • Scope 3: All other indirect emissions that occur as a result of our operations whilst not being directly owned or controlled by Civica, such as those from our supply chain, business travel and employee commuting.

Our approach to carbon reporting

We follow recognised best practice, including the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, to support accurate and transparent carbon reporting. Our carbon reporting methodology combines activity data, spend data, industry-standard benchmarks and carbon conversion factors. For more information on our progress towards net zero, see our ESG report (global) or our Carbon Reduction Plan (UK footprint only).

ESG Report

Our global ESG report provides a transparent overview of the approach to sustainability at Civica and is prepared in accordance with the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Sustainability Accounting Standard for the Software and IT Services Industry.

FAQs

What is Civica's net zero target?

Civica is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions across our global operations by 2040. This commitment forms part of our wider sustainability strategy and our approach to operating responsibly while supporting the communities and public services we serve.

Does Civica have interim carbon reduction targets?

Yes. Alongside our 2040 net zero commitment, we have chosen to set interim carbon reduction targets for 2030/31. These are aligned with best practice and the Science Based Targets initiative’s near-term target-setting methodology, helping us maintain momentum and demonstrate accountability as we work towards net zero.

What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?

Scope 1 emissions come directly from sources owned or controlled by Civica, such as company vehicles or on-site fuel combustion. Scope 2 emissions are associated with the generation of energy we purchase, including electricity used in our offices. Scope 3 covers other indirect emissions resulting from our operations, including supply chain emissions, business travel and employee commuting.
