NorthStar Internship

Hello! So, you’re interested in joining us for an Internship? That’s great news, but we’re guessing you have some initial questions ahead of applying to join us? The following FAQ will hopefully give you the answers you need, but if not, then you can always drop us an email. Simply contact: northstar@civica.co.uk

How many intern opportunities are available?

We currently have two intern opportunities available within Civica’s NorthStar innovation lab.

Can you tell me more about these opportunities?

Of course…

Internship 1: NorthStar recognition

We’d like to develop a recognition scheme that distinguishes Civica projects with a high level of innovation. This NorthStar recognition may be like the Michelin star system. Your role would be to undertake a review of how the Michelin star system works and investigate whether there are any other relevant schemes out there that we could learn from. We’ll be looking to you to provide ideas for how the scheme could be established across Civica, as well as what the applications process and criteria might look like and how it could be awarded and disseminated. We’ll invite you to pitch your proposal to our governance team at the end of your internship. (Not as scary as it sounds - promise! 😊).

What skills/experience are you looking for?

We welcome applications from all backgrounds and skillsets. We expect you may be studying Business Studies or Engineering/Computer Science, but whatever you’re doing you’ll have a passion for innovation and entrepreneurship. We’d also expect you to be interested in how organisations value and recognise innovation and how this can be used to enhance their commercial proposition. Above all, we’re looking for someone with a positive, ‘can do’ attitude, who’s up for a challenge

Internship 2: Ambassador engagement

Civica has 100 Innovation Ambassadors across the Group, whose role is to champion innovation and drive change. We’re keen to explore how we can keep them engaged and motivated, and of course, reward the activities they undertake. We’d expect you to carry out a review of best-practice engagement tools in the external consumer and education sectors (including Status Points, Badges, Leader Boards, Progress Bars and Challenges), and how this could be implemented across our NorthStar network. We’ll invite you to pitch your proposal to our governance team at the end of your internship. (Not as scary as it sounds - promise! 😊).

What skills/experience are you looking for?

We’re open to all skills and experiences, although we think you’ll probably be studying Business Studies or Marketing. Your specific interests will be in areas of employee engagement, community building, reward and recognition and internal communications as that is what you’ll learn during your time with us. Above all, we’re looking for someone with a positive, ‘can do’ attitude, who’s up for a challenge!

How long is the internship for?

Each internship will take place over a 6-week period.

Will I get paid?

Absolutely! You’ll receive the living wage as compensation for your contribution.

Where will I work?

You’ll be working from home. However, depending on lockdown restrictions being eased, there will hopefully be an opportunity for us to meet in person. With approval before travelling, the cost of travel will be covered by Civica.

Will I need access to a personal computer?

No, we’ll provide you with all the IT equipment you need for the duration of your placement.

Who will I work with?

You’ll work directly with Civica’s Head of Innovation - Liz O’Driscoll. And, don’t let the job title alarm you, Liz is one of the most personable and supportive people you’ll meet. Once upon a time, Liz was starting out in business and remembers those day one nerves all too well!

Who else will I be working with?

You’ll have the opportunity to engage with a variety of people across our business, but will work especially closely with Harold de Neef, Group Director - Cloud; Kieran Mitchell - Marketing Manager, Strategic; and Sarah Turton, Director of Group Communications & Engagement.

Your project briefs mentioned something called NorthStar. What is NorthStar?

Civica NorthStar is an innovation lab focused on creating enhanced outcomes for public services. By applying fresh ideas around data, automation and new technologies, it helps deliver better services for communities around the world.

Civica NorthStar aims to develop a culture of innovation around four main ‘pillars’:

1. Testing new concepts through Civica NorthStar projects

2. Sharing points of view and thought leadership on new technologies

3. Offering learning and development opportunities for our colleagues

4. Providing spaces (physical and virtual) where colleagues, customers and partners can innovate.

I’m sold! How do I apply?
