Civica Learning to provide digital learning support to Samaritans

7th February 2020

Civica will provide Samaritans with a new online learning platform to support the charity’s volunteers.

Samaritans is a charity focused on the support of individual’s wellbeing and has over 20,000 volunteers providing emotional support to people in need.

Samaritans will use Civica's learning management system (formerly Agylia) and mobile learning Apps to deliver curated and personalised learning resources for volunteers. The learning resources will include the use of eLearning, user generated content, and on and offline communities of practice.

Rob Christopher, Learning & Development Manager at Samaritans said, “With around 15,000 volunteers who operate our Listening Service from 201 branches across the UK and Ireland, learning time needs to be accessible. With this new platform and the mobile learning Apps for iOS and Android devices, volunteers will be able to access digital learning content when they are at home, at work or on the go via different devices.”

Partnering with Civica will enable us to engage our volunteers with a more personalised learning experience and connect everyone through the adoption of social learning.

“A key priority for us is the learner experience. With its focus on user experience, through engaging interfaces, simple navigation and extensive search capabilities, we will be able to use Civica Learning to provide great learning and support as part of learning pathways and as self-led learning.”

Civica Learning will provide Samaritans with the ability to deliver a wide range of curated digital learning content from many sources, both internal and external - such as eLearning courses, third party videos (e.g. Ted Talks and YouTube), podcasts and documents.

Samaritans will be able to offer a more personalised learning experience, through the creation of structured individual learning pathways, which will provide volunteers with clear development options.

Samaritans will also use Civica Learning's gamification capabilities to award digital badges, trophies and certificates to encourage engagement and show recognition of the learning achievements.

Tim Buff, CEO and Chief Learning Strategist at Civica said, “Samaritans is an inspirational organisation and provide a vital and much needed service. We are very pleased to be able to partner with them in that work and are looking forward to working with Samaritans, and other charities, not just to improve the learning and development they provide, but also the very positive contributions they make to our wider society.”
