How Civica people brush up on their tech

We're providing tech evenings for colleagues to share industry knowledge and skills

Civica’s technology hub in Vadodara provides vital skills, innovation and expertise to the Civica Group; developing and supporting its global customer base and extending its market-leading cloud software and digital services capability.

Nearly 600 employees are based at the hub, as a result of placing an increased focus on providing opportunities for graduates and emerging talent.

Sharing knowledge on tools, technologies, methodologies or the latest industry innovations are crucial to learning and development. The hub has hosted ‘tech evenings’ for over a year to provide this and more – enabling collaboration between colleagues from Civica’s development and functional testing areas and mentoring by technical experts.

Software Development Manager Nirman Doshi leads the monthly sessions. Topics are based on business need or colleagues’ own interests and passions, with volunteers delivering content on their topic of choice.

After lockdown forced events to be put on hold, the team adapted and launched its first online tech evening, with colleagues Vikas Brahmbhatt, Santosh Srivastava and Satyajeet Singh sharing their knowledge on data engineering and data science.

Nirman explains the purpose of the hub’s tech evenings.

“Each session focuses on a different topic with specific outcomes, but most of them align with our business vision. For instance, we share best practice (OWASP Top 10, unit testing, Behaviour Driven Development framework); trends in the market (data engineering, data science, data visualisation); innovations (Internet of Things), and insights on new tools and technologies (Blazor for .NET developers).

“As well as the above, to date we’ve covered Docker and containerization, and React. We’ve had really positive feedback and people do request follow-up sessions.

“It’s important that we keep our colleagues connected and engaged at the moment, especially through virtual learning. While they work on business priorities with project teams, our tech evenings give them an opportunity to gain knowledge on technical aspects outside of their project space and collaborate with others to widen their perspective.

“When it’s safe to return to our facility we’d like to conduct the evenings in larger conference rooms, but still have colleagues connect virtually from their desk or homeworking space.”
