Why is it important for women to support each other in the workplace?

Women need to be empowered to feel comfortable at opening up and being confident in their ability and position in the workplace. As a working mother in a leadership position at Civica, I value the relationships I have with mentors – both male and female – to openly and honestly support and share experiences with, and to be role models for other women that aren’t so confident.

How do you think gender equal workplaces can be achieved?

Make gender diversity a workplace objective and ensure all roles – including those at a leadership level – are focused on gender diversity. For example, an interview panel should have female representation and ensure female candidates are included in the interview process.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced, or bias you’ve fought, to get to the position you’re in now?

The software development environment is traditionally male-oriented and gender equality isn’t quite there yet. It can sometimes be challenging to pitch ideas and generally get involved. By focusing on getting the right business and customer outcomes, you can get through it and push through roadblocks. I also try to pave the way for other women too.

Is there anything you’ve personally done to encourage women to consider a career in technology?

I’m open to sharing and discussing my career in technology and promoting the opportunities available to anyone willing to give it a try. More recently, I’ve reached out to mentor graduates, both male and female. Totally rewarding and interesting!

What more can women do to motivate each other in the workplace?

Be open to supporting each other to grow networks both within and outside of work. Be advocates for other women, don’t judge – continue to have empathy and support them. Ensure you work with male mentors who are advocates for gender diversity and be a champion for other young women who want to join and embrace gender diversity anywhere.
