Hull City Council selects Civica to support and modernise its Coroner’s department

New partnership to improve quality of care to bereaved families

2 March 2016, London: Civica, a market leader in specialist systems and business process services that help organisations transform the way they work, has announced a new partnership with Hull City Council to deliver a more integrated and automated way of working to its Coroner’s Office, to offer higher quality of care to bereaved families.

The Coroner’s Office investigate deaths reported within Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire. It’s vital for the Office to have access to up-to-date information at all times, to ensure timely and accurate decisions. That’s why, last year, the Council began making improvements to its reporting processes and data analysis by overhauling its existing IT legacy system and replacing it with Civica’s Coroner’s solution.

In the past, doctors reported deaths to Hull’s Coroner’s Office over the phone, which increased the chance of human error and also meant that deaths could not be recorded when the Coroner’s Office was closed. However, through use of Civica Coroners solution, doctors will be able to submit deaths reports into the system in real-time, eliminating the need for manual intervention and reducing the risk of inaccuracies. By automating document and form production, the solution improves communications and equips managers at the Coroner’s Office with the information needed to analyse data, monitor workloads and produce more detailed management reports reflecting performance statistics. The council also expects that Civica's software will eventually enable them to benefit from a paperless environment, which will free up office space, currently saturated with paper files, and increase the speed and quality of communication with doctors.

High quality support following a bereavement is the core of what we do. Like many other authorities Hull is under pressure to improve cost-efficiencies and move towards a paperless working environment, the only difference is that our department also deals with the most sensitive of issues. As we’d already been working with Civica in other areas of the local authority we had no doubt that they’d be the right partner, they understood our needs and aspirations from the start and delivered a solution that will not only impact our Office but will also positively impact the whole community.”

As well as recently implementing its Coroner’s solution for Cumbria County Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.
